The village of Mudio was astir today. We (the Wazungus) showed up to work on the parish farm (Shamba). We hoed alongside Mudio parish members to work the weeds out of the ground. I"m sure they could have completed the task themselves much more efficiently, but we enjoyed working, laughing, and learning with them. Passers-by stopped to ask the parish members why a bunch of Wazungus were working in their field. It was an unusual follow-up to the gifts and hype that typically follow a Wazungu visit. What a witness!
Once the fieldwork was completed, we moved on to making concrete blocks that will be used in the construction of the building that will house new maize mills. Again, the workers could have completed the project efficiently without us, but they certainly would not have had nearly as much entertainment!
Following lunch, we visited a nearby market and dispensary.
The group is doing well, especially with learning Kiswahili. Or at least giving it a try!
I think we would all agree that we feel close to God when we are close to the people her. Everyone touches our hearts and fills us with joy. The Mudio people live in and by God's grace. And they never short God on glory or praise, no matter what the circumstance, and especially if it's a bunch of smiling Wagunzus in a little Shamba farm.
